*EXCERPT - A CREATURE OF THE NIGHT*
The train made an occasional comforting chukka noise that soon lulled Adam to sleep. He dreamed of intense darkness enfolding him, but not just enfolding him; soon, the darkness was enveloping and smothering him. A hazy impression of a white face with pale lips stretched in a mirthless grin, and black eyes lit by a demonic red glow danced in his mind. He tried to move, but a powerful stupor pinned him to the bunk. More than the lethargy of sleep, the sensation made his limbs feel as if they were made of lead. He coughed as a fine dust tickled his nose and throat; he heard the others cough as well. Adam fought the sensation and actually lifted his shoulders off the bunk before the paralyzing heaviness dragged him back down again. He heard a cough from Kim and then silence. The dust was thicker now, clogging his air passages. He choked, unable to breathe properly. With a huge gasp, he thrust himself into a sitting position and opened his eyes. As his eyes adjusted to the gloom, what he saw made him scream, but the scream was silent because his vocal cords refused to obey his brain.
A dark shape like a giant bat hovered over Justin. Adam fought the heaviness, managing to drag his body off the bunk by sheer willpower. He crashed to the floor, unable to stand because his legs had lost all strength. The figure swung round and hissed when it saw him, its eyes glowing with an angry fire. Then, raising its arms, it leaped at him with a screech of rage. Adam stared, powerless. Suddenly, a small shape barreled its way toward the figure, thudding into its legs and clamping down hard with sharp teeth. It was Smudge. There was an excited yelp, a growl, and a scream of pain. Adam blinked blearily at the swirling fury of arms, legs, teeth, tail, and cloak, wondering how it was possible. Smudge was having a glorious time repelling the invader threatening his new friends. From the yells, it certainly sounded human. Kim’s head popped over the bunk above Justin, who had also sat up. Both of them stared open-mouthed at the sight of Smudge in action.The Early Buzz
